GemFair is a program by De Beers Group aimed at formalizing the Artisanal and Small Scale Mining (ASM) industry, and has sold the first batch of ethically traceable ASM diamonds through the group’s auctions. This batch of diamonds covers different qualities and sizes, with the largest weighing 11 carats, all purchased from GemFair registered ASM mines in Sierra Leone. De Beers stated that due to strong consumer demand, all gem quality auction items have been sold.
Since GemFair established 14 pilot sites in Sierra Leone in 2018, it has expanded to nearly 200 registered ASM mines. GemFair has been procuring rough diamonds from its member mines and has also established the GemFair ASM Assurance Program, which uses digital technology to develop traceability schemes and establish information files related to diamonds, in order to bring these diamonds out of the market. The impact of the COVID-19 on the trading volume is also considered. GemFair Director Steve Allan said, “Diamond buyers and jewelry designers are deeply interested in GemFair diamonds.
We will continue to strive to find the best way to tell the unique story of GemFair diamonds to a wider audience, as well as showcase the program’s role in providing equal opportunities and improving the working environment for artisanal miners. ”De Beers pointed out that GemFair connects manual and small-scale miners with the global market through digital technology and ensuring ethical work environments. The company added: ‘By providing secure and traceable solutions, the market can access diamonds from ASM mines that comply with ethical standards.’.
At the same time, GemFair collaborates with artisanal miners to improve work standards and enhance the livelihoods of communities that rely on this important industry
